The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Whenever a major awards ceremony approaches, one notices a clamor to include additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and fill the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked completely that year
  • Another creative title missed out in 2019
  • A beloved organization game got ignored recently
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles globally continuing this trend for many years.

The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
