Larian Studios Unveil a Fresh Divinity, Calling it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The buzz around The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The mystery has been revealed. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer that included striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio clarified that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This distinction implies that the team is likely building a real-time experience instead of another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it sparked the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, branching plots, and deep class systems—elements that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities only possible if you're playing as a specific type of character with a personal story.

The series is also notoriously permissive, enabling players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be completed in diverse methods, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can anticipate another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
